What is it about?
The ‘Austria on the go’ (‘Österreich unterwegs’) study examines mobility in Austria, which requires information about citizens’ mobility patterns. The last survey took place in 2013/14. The results of the last survey can be found here. The ‘Austria on the go’ (‘Österreich unterwegs’) study is now being updated.
To this end, a representative sample of households and individuals will once again be surveyed about their daily mobility habits and the trips they made on a specific reporting day.
Who initiated this study?
Infrastructure operators ASFINAG and ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG are jointly investigating mobility in Austria with the Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure (Bundesministerium für Innovation, Mobilität und Infrastruktur; BMIMI).
The study will again be conducted by infas Institut für angewandte Sozialwissenschaft and its experienced partners from the mobility sector. The interview team conducting the survey on site is supported by Triconsult from Vienna and Spectra from Linz. Additional partners include Motiontag, infas360 and Herry Consult.

How does it work?
The survey will start in spring 2026 and run for roughly one year. The focus is on your mobility (i.e. your commute) on a randomly selected reporting day. Even if you are not travelling that day, your answers provide important information for mapping actual mobility in Austria. Before and after the reporting day, a member of our interview team will visit you at home for a personal interview.
What are the individual steps?
- Information about your household
First, we would like to learn more about your household and its general mobility patterns. Our interview team has a translated version of the questionnaire for you. Please wait until we visit you for the first time or contact us at kontakt@oesterreich-unterwegs.com - Your mobility on the reporting day
Your commute will be recorded for one day using a smartphone provided to you. It will automatically track wherever you go via GPS. If you prefer, you can also write down your trips on mobility sheets, which we will gladly provide. - Debriefing on your mobility on the reporting day
After your reporting day, we will visit you again to discuss your commute and retrieve the smartphone (duration: approx. 15 minutes per person in the household). Your mobility data will not be processed until after this appointment.
Let’s get started together!
